A surprising option for accommodations in Big Sur is VRBO, Vacation Rental by Owner. And one that many people don't think about. Why? Maybe because they're afraid. Let me explain.
They might ask themselves, How do I find the right place? How do I know that the rental is as advertised? Can I trust the owner? What if the place is not clean or well maintained? What if it's a scam?
Wow, that's a lot of How do's and What if's! The fact of the matter is, we have so many options available to us in today's world for finding the right place, being sure you're getting what you hope you're getting, and keeping you safe. There's really nothing to be afraid of if you do your due diligence!

Do Your Research Read listings carefully and thoroughly; look at photos with a critical eye; use Google Earth to see the location and the neighborhood. Be on the lookout for deals that sound just to good to be true - you've heard it before, they probably are too good to be true. Also treat pricing that's sharply below other similar rentals in the same area, and poor grammar as red flags. Read all reviews on the booking site, but also check out other review sites like TripAdvisor.com, Google.com, Yelp.com, BBB.org, ConsumerAffairs.com. You can even google the name or address of the property you're interested in to find other reviews on the internet. Take everything you read into consideration - same complaint over and over? Think about it.
Contact the owner by email, and particularly by phone. Ask lots of questions, especially about things that are not in the listing. Get to know the owner, get a feel for him or her. Ask for references from past guests, check on the cancellation policy, ask for a rental agreement.
Beyond all, trust your instincts. If something feels not quite right, move on to the next listing.
Book and Pay Safely
Ask for a rental agreement and read it carefully - make sure you understand the cancellation policy, security deposit policy (is it refundable?), and the house rules.
Call to confirm reservation and payment details before making payment.
Use secure payment methods such as PayPal.com (your bank or credit card information is not given to the owner), credit card (many offer charge-back protection), check (stop payment option), or ReservationsManager.com.
Do not pay using cash, or money sending services like Western Union or Money Gram - it's too easy for criminals to use them.
Consider getting trip insurance, damage protection, and/or cancellation protection just to be safe.
Again, above all, trust your gut!

There are a couple of different type options for finding vacation rentals in the Big Sur area. The first is to find a home or cabin that's being rented by the owner(s) - part of the sharing economy we're hearing so much about these days.
Of course, there have always been people who owned property to rent out, or had a vacation home or cabin to rent out when they weren't using it. It's no different in Big Sur.
What makes the sharing economy so unique is that now you can go online, find a website that amalgamates vacation rentals by owner, and surf its listings to find the perfect rental for you, whether it be a home, cabin, apartment, condo, whatever.
Here are a few of the websites that promise owner rentals in Big Sur: AirBnB.com, VRBO.com, HomeAway.com, HomeExchange.com (which is actually a home trading amalgamator - they stay in your home and you stay in theirs, but it's free), and FlipKey.com (associated with Trip Advisor).
Give one a try if you're so inclined, but be sure to do your due diligence (see above).
The other option for vacation rentals is for you Big Sur campers out their. Instead of schlepping all your camping gear - tents, sleeping bags, coolers, etc. - from Southern California, far Northern California, or across the country to Big Sur, try the easiest possible form of RV camping ever!
Arrange to rent a local RV from its owner, reserve your dates and campsite at the campground of your choice (see Discover Big Sur Camping for some ideas), and the RV owner will have your RV all set up at your campsite, just waiting for you.
Of course, in this age of sharing economies, there are websites that amalgamate RV owners who do this so you all can easily find each other. They include: RVPlusYou.com, VRBO.com, ShareMyCoach.com, and ShareMyRVRental.com.
And again, try one or more out if this sounds ideal to you, but always do your due diligence.
