Discovering Northern California Solano County

Visit Solano County in the Northeastern Corner of the Bay Area

Bet you didn't know that Solano County boasts three of America's favorite theme destinations! That's right. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Amusement Park is in Vallejo. Anheuser Busch Brewery - one of only 12 in the U.S - calls Fairfield home. And Jelly Belly's home factory is in Fairfield, too. And here you were, trying to figure out why you would want to visit Solano ... But wait, there's more!

Solano is the northeastern-most county in the San Francisco Bay Area, midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. It borders on the Bay and about 80 percent of its land is preserved for open space. That, combined with its fair weather conditions allows for year-round outdoor recreational opportunities.

Enter Solano County and you'll stumble upon a land of gently undulating hills, enticing waterfronts, and productive farmland dotted here and there with a city or town.

It's easy to say that Solano's attractions include - in addition to the above mentioned - Lake Solano Park, the Solano County Fair, several museums, many events and festivals, but that hardly does it justice. Come on, let's find out more.

Discovering Solano County's History

Stone-Age artifacts discovered in Green Valley show an even older lifeline than that. They date back as far as 2000 B.C.E.

Stone-Age artifacts discovered in Green Valley show an even older lifeline than that. They date back as far as 2000 B.C.E.

And it's been occupied by humans ever since (over 4000 years) for the same reasons that we mentioned above: fertile land, access to the Bay, and moderate weather.

The county has also included portions of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta since sea levels were raised by the glacier melts following the last Ice Age (about 10,000 years ago).

The Delta is a large freshwater marshland that consists of nearly 60 islands and tracts surrounded by channels and sloughs. Because it collects sedimentation from two rivers - the Sacramento River from the North, and the San Joaquin River from the south - the Delta attracts wildlife including fish, game, and waterfowl, helping to provide water, food, and shelter for early Native Americans in the past just as it does for us even now.

Discovering Solano County Today

People still enjoy fertile productive land on which to hunt and farm, access to fresh water and excellent fishing, beautiful and alluring waterfront property, open spaces to explore, and lakes for boating and water sports.

But you'll also find cities large and small, world famous attractions and Insider Secret entertainments, vineyards and wine tasting, Sunday drives through the farmlands and the foothills of the Coastal Range, farm stands and golf courses, wildlife preserves and ranch tours, museums and arts - performing and otherwise.

Solano County's Allure

You may decide to bring the kids to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for thrilling roller coaster rides, exotic animals, and family entertainment. Or maybe you're spending your hard-earned vacation dollars on a Solano trip for a tour of the Anheuser Busch Brewery - the only one on the West Coast - in order to explore the company's greenest brewery. Perhaps you've always wanted to see how those wacky little bits of kooky-flavored gems are made, so you're planning a trip to the Jelly Belly Factory.

Whatever your initial reason for coming, plan to spend a weekend or a week to give yourself time to explore the rest of Solano County!

History Buff? There are many interesting museums recounting the various segments of Solano's past, present, and future: Travis Air Museum (that's right, Fairfield is the former home of Travis Air Force Base, now Travis Air Force Base Heritage Center); Pena Adobe Museum; Western Railroad Museum; Benicia Fire Museum; Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum; Benicia Capital SHP (yup, Benicia was once the Capital of California!) - just to name a few.

Interested in outdoor activities? Choose from boating, fishing, hunting, clay shooting, bird watching, county and regional parks, skateboarding, golf courses, children's playgrounds, BMX courses, and more.

Want to see where our food is produced? Drive the country roads to see the prolific fields and orchards; stop at the local farm stands and visit with the farmers. Also, several farms in the area offer tours by appointment - Phoenix Ranch, Rush Ranch, and Alpaca Ranch for examples.

A patron of the Arts? How about a trip to Benicia for a glass blowing demonstration at one of the city's famous glass arts studios. Take in a show at Suisun Harbor Theatre, located on the water in Suisun City. Peruse any of the county's numerous art galleries in Benicia, Vallejo, and Suisun Valley.

Or visit the interesting and sometimes quaint cities and towns of Solano County to stroll, browse, and shop. You'll be charmed by downtown Vacaville, Dixon, and Fairfield, and you'll adore the beautiful waterfront treatments offered by Benicia, Vallejo, Rio Vista, and Suisun City!
