Is Chico is vying for the title "Most Farmers Markets in One Town"! I don't know - you be the judge!
The city of Chico had a population of approximately 86,187 as of the 2010 census, yet there are no fewer than eight markets in the city!
If I'm not mistaken, there's at least one (and sometimes more) market every day of the week except on Mondays. We could be like the French and go to the market for fresh fruits and veggies almost every day!

The farmers' market is one of humankind's oldest institutions, stemming from a casual gathering place where farmers could show off their wares. Since then, they've grown into larger central marketplaces. It seems as if farmers have carted their freshly grown and harvested produce to a centralized marketplace since the beginning of time. I'm pleased to report that the culture is alive and well in the cute little college town of Chico, California |
I've discovered no fewer than eight - Count 'em! eight! - markets! In fact, you can hit a farmers market nearly every day of the week in Chico!
And, like their prehistoric counterparts, you'll find fresh and local produce, meats, hand crafts, and baked goods for sale, plus a wide variety of things to entertain you at today's farm-fresh marketplaces!
So, without further ado, let's explore Chico's farmers markets!
Saturday Farmers Market
A long-time Chico tradition, located in beautiful and vibrant downtown Chico with fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, local breadmakers' and caterers' products, and more.
North Valley Plaza Saturday Market
Brand new, this market extends the Saturday Market (see above) to the North end of town for the convenience of North Chico residents.
Roadrunner Community Market Place
Farm-fresh produce, arts and crafts, Children's Zone, Flea Market, Auto Alley - this new market is located in South Chico and helps support Butte College Scholarships.
Enloe Farmers Market
Created to encourage healthy eating and lifestyle, and arranged under the Magnolia trees, this market offers locally grown produce and includes Blood Pressure checks and access to the Health Learning Center.
North Valley Plaza Wednesday Market
Quality fruits and vegetables from local farmers are available on Wednesdays too - many of which are specialty crops you won't find in a supermarket.
Chico State University Farm's: The Farm Stand
The Farm Stand is a specialty market offering organically grown produce from the University's own Organic Farm.
Thursday Night Market
Although you'll find an abundance of fresh produce from local farmers at the Thursday Night Market, it's as much a social meet-up place as it is a farmers market. Stroll the closed-off streets and see who you run into as you shop.
Chapman Farmers Market
A nonprofit market promoting nutrition, exercise, education, and outreach, Chapman is the only farmers market north of Sacramento that takes Food Stamps.
