On Chico Kite Day, everyone becomes a flyer of kites: it's a great afternoon of fun for Moms, Dads, Kids, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles - heck, just bring everyone! Believe it or not, upwards of 5000 people have attended past Kite Days!
Held on the fourth Saturday in March at Community Park every year, it's
free, it's fun, and it's festive, with prizes for the best hand-made
kites, music, and a souvenir commemorative Kite Day button for everyone,
thanks to the wonderful people at the specialty store and home of the
National Yo-Yo Museum, Bird in Hand.

Kite Flying; © Peter Bodik
From Noon to 4:00 p.m. Chicoans gather at Community Park off State Highway 99, for an afternoon of kite flying. Colorful kites of all shapes and sizes fill the Spring skies as children, teens, and adults run as hard as they can, squealing and shouting with delight as their kites catch the wind. |
Beg, borrow, build your own, or steal (Okay, I'm just kidding about the stealing part!) a kite or two, maybe bring a picnic lunch, and join the fun: Go fly a kite!
Chico Kite Day started its annual tradition in 1985 when a loosely organized group called the Chico Kiteflyers decided that Chico needed a family-friendly official day for their favorite pastime - flying kites on a fabulous Spring day. And it has been an generational Chico tradition for the past 30 years, with grandparents who attended some of the first Kite Days and who later brought their children into the tradition, and are now sharing that tradition with their grandchildren!
A beautiful day - it usually is, in spite of the vagaries of the time of the year - fresh air, friends, family, college students, and neighbors, imaginative and colorful kites - Chico Kite Day sounds like a recipe for a superlative day to us!
