Big Sur camping updates are necessary because Big Sur sits on the edge of the world so to speak, and the area is subject to rock slides and sometimes firestorms. If you have plans to visit the Big Sur area, you need the latest information available on what's open and what's not!
Rugged, isolated, and resplendent in its beauty, Big Sur offers us extraordinary and diverse options to explore its attractions, but it is also unpredictable in its very nature.
If you're planning to visit for a day, a week, or a month, you need the latest information on accessibility, new updates on road closures, and the latest on Big Sur camping and campgrounds.

We first started this page after the 2008 wildfires that engulfed Big Sur and wreaked havoc on residents and visitors alike. |
In this case, though fire is devastating to people, communities, and wildlife, it is often part of the natural process of a landscape and can have a wonderful effect on an area's flora.
Such is the case in California. Very often fires assist in the opening of seeds that won't sprout on their own, and the natural fertilization process that occurs after a fire adds nutrients to the soil, resulting in rapid new growth like this amazing wildflower display!
That's the good news. The bad news is, sites you planned to visit and campgrounds where you planned to stay can be closed or partially closed during and after the fire.
Additionally, there's the issue of rock slides, which may occur shortly after a fire, heavy rains, and/or high surf - or may occur months or years later because of slippage from these earlier impacts.
There's only one road into, out of, and through Big Sur - scenic Highway 1. For much of its length along here, it hugs the Santa Lucia Mountains of the coastline and looks down over the Pacific Ocean.
Rock slides come from above - wiping out sections of the highway hundreds of yards long with massive piles of boulders and debris - or from below - undermining and collapsing equally large portions of the highway.
Either way the result is the same for you and I - no way to get in or out without lengthy, cumbrous detours and delays until repairs can be made!
With this Big Sur Camping Update Guide, you'll have exactly the information you need about current conditions in Big Sur!
