I'm a teacher in Northern California & I'm looking for ideas for a history field trip that would be fun for 5th graders. Any ideas for me?

Sacramento History Museum
by: Suzi

Greetings,

That is WAY cool!

And you were right down there in Old Sacramento with all the historic buildings, the riverfront, and all the ambiance of Sacramento in the early days! I'm glad you and your son's class had such a rewarding experience!

Thanks for the report!

P.S. Anyone who hasn't visited the museum in a while, it used to be called the Discovery Museum History Center.

Cheers,
Suzi

Best Field Trip Ever
by: Anonymous

My son's class went to the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento. It was the best field trip I have been on! The guide was fun & super interactive. They got to pan for gold and got an authentic Wanted Poster with their name on it printed on an 1850's printing press! How cool is that?

Greet,

It's great to have your personal experience perspective re your visit to Coloma! I've been there many times also - it's very much like a '49er town would have been.

Any others out there?

Cheers,
Suzi

California Gold Rush
by: Suzi

Greetings Jennifer,

How about a lesson on the California Gold Rush - start at Old Sacramento to give the kids an idea of what Sacramento looked like as the 49ers arrived (museums, shops, trains, one-room schoolhouse and a paddle boat); then to Sutter's Fort (great self-guided tour of the fort with narrative and views of life in the 1800s); depending on your time frame, next stop could be Coloma for Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park before you head for home again.

Of course, this is only one possibility. Depending on where you are in NorCal, there are many other sites to visit for Gold Rush history, but Sacramento's where it all began!

Cheers,
Suzi
